Konsep ini digagas oleh Hendri Agustin seorang pendaki gunung dan penggiat alam terbuka di Indonesia. Konsep tujuh puncak tertinggi di tujuh pulau/kepulauan besar Indonesia ini pertama kali dikenalkan di komunitas-komunitas penggiat alam dan pendaki gunung Indonesia di beberapa media interaksi online yang kala itu tengah populer yaitu mailing list Yahoo pada tanggal 20 November 2008. Munculnya angka 7 (tujuh) juga terinspirasi dengan konsep “World Seven Summits” yaitu konsep tujuh puncak tertinggi di tujuh lempeng benua dunia yang digagas pertama kali oleh seorang pendaki kelahiran Tulsa, Oklahoma bernama Richard “Dick” Bass. Konsep “The Seven Summits of Indonesia” ini kemudian di sebar luaskan lagi di blog pribadi Hendri Agustin, dan terus hingga munculnya era Facebook, konsep ini terus dikenalkan ke khalayak pendaki gunung Indonesia.
Pada konsep ini juga termuat rekor-rekor yang bisa dicetak dan dibukukan dan hingga beberapa tahun setelah pencetusan konsep ini baru satu orang yang klaim berhasil mendaki ke tujuh puncak tersebut yaitu Dody Johan Jaya, pada tahun 2011. Klaim dinyatakan sah setelah Dody bisa menunjukan bukti-bukti yang dimintakan.

The concept of the seven highest peaks on seven large island/s in Indonesian archipelago was first introduced in communities and nature enthusiasts Indonesian mountaineers in some media online interaction that was popular at the time that Yahoo mailing list on November 21, 2008. After a few years this new concept introduced, one climber claimed that has been successfully climb the seven summits of Indonesia is name Dody Johan Jaya in 2011. Claim are considered valid after Dody could show the evidence requested.
